Remember when AI assistants were basically glorified search bars with better grammar? You'd paste in some text, ask it to clean things up, and call it a day.

Anthropic is betting those days are over.

On Tuesday, the company launched a massive update to Cowork, its enterprise platform that lets Claude operate as a specialized agent across your actual work tools. The headline: 10 new plugins spanning HR, design, engineering, operations, finance, and more, plus the ability for Claude to work across Excel and PowerPoint simultaneously.

The pitch is straightforward: Instead of a one-size-fits-all chatbot, you install the new Claude plugin tailored to your role, and Claude starts thinking like someone who actually does your job.

But the real story is bigger than any single plugin. Anthropic is building what's essentially an app store for AI coworkers, and it's positioning Claude as the operating system underneath.

As CNBC reported, Wall Street definitely noticed. Software stocks have been getting hammered for weeks over fears that AI tools like Cowork would replace entire software categories. But Tuesday's announcement actually calmed nerves: Salesforce jumped 4%, Thomson Reuters surged 11%, and FactSet rose nearly 6% after Anthropic revealed it was partnering with these companies rather than replacing them. Let's get into what they actually announced below.

TL;DR:

If you only have two minutes, read this. The new plugins span two categories.

General enterprise roles include:

  • HR: Drafts performance reviews, builds onboarding plans, benchmarks comp data
  • Design: Runs design critiques, writes UX copy, conducts accessibility audits
  • Engineering: Writes standup summaries, drafts post-mortems, handles incident response
  • Operations: Documents processes, compares vendor proposals, forecasts hiring needs
  • Brand Voice (by Tribe AI): Scans your existing content to distill enforceable brand guidelines

Then there are five plugins specifically for finance:

  • Financial Analysis: Models financial statements, ratios, and scenarios for corporate and project analysis
  • Investment Banking: Drafts pitchbooks, deal comps, and transaction materials for M&A and capital markets
  • Equity Research: Builds earnings models, valuation notes, and coverage summaries on public companies.
  • Private Equity: Evaluates deals with LBO cases, IC memos, and portfolio performance views.
  • Wealth Management: Designs client portfolios, proposals, and planning memos across risk profiles

All five of the finance plugins are open source. New data connectors for FactSet and MSCI bring institutional-grade market data directly into Claude's context.

But the feature that matters most? Claude now works across Excel and PowerPoint simultaneously, carrying context between apps. An analyst can pull data, update a model, and build the slide deck in one session. When inputs change, Claude updates everything downstream. Finally, an AI that understands the pain of reformatting a pivot table into a deck at 11 PM.

PwC is already partnering with Anthropic to deploy these agents in the CFO's office, and the plugin approach is smart: it means Claude already knows your domain, so you can skip the "let me explain my job" preamble.

All plugins are available now for Team and Enterprise customers. The Excel-to-PowerPoint workflow is in research preview for all paid plans on Mac and Windows.

Now, let's dive into all that with a bit more detail.

What actually launched

The plugins fall into two buckets: general enterprise roles and finance-specific workflows.

What the general enterprise plugins can do:

  • Human Resources: Draft performance reviews, build onboarding plans, benchmark compensation, and interpret company policies. Think of it as an HR generalist who never forgets your handbook.
  • Design: Run design critiques, write UX copy, conduct accessibility audits (WCAG 2.1 AA), and synthesize user research findings.
  • Engineering: Write standup summaries from recent commits, draft architecture decision records, coordinate incident response, and handle post-mortems.
  • Operations: Document processes with decision points and SLAs (service-level agreements, i.e. performance guarantees), compare vendor proposals, draft change management plans, and forecast hiring needs.
  • Brand Voice (by Tribe AI): Scans your existing content across Notion, Google Drive, Slack, and Gong to distill your brand's voice into guidelines Claude can enforce. New hires produce on-brand content from day one.

What the finance plugins can do:

  • Financial Analysis: Build DCF models (discounted cash flow, a method for valuing companies based on projected future earnings), run comparable company analysis, structure LBOs (leveraged buyouts), and review pitch decks.
  • Investment Banking: Draft confidential information memorandums, generate company profiles for pitch books, run accretion/dilution analyses, and build buyer lists.
  • Equity Research: Parse earnings transcripts, update financial models with new guidance, and draft research notes.
  • Private Equity: Review large document sets for due diligence, extract standardized financial data, model scenarios, and score opportunities against investment criteria.
  • Wealth Management: Analyze portfolio, identify drift and tax exposure, and generate rebalancing recommendations at scale.

All five finance plugins are available as open source on GitHub, so firms can customize them for their own workflows and terminology.

The cross-app workflow is the real unlock

The plugins are useful. But the feature that matters most for how people actually work? Claude can now pass context between Excel and PowerPoint.

That might sound mundane. It's not.

An equity analyst can ask Claude to pull earnings data, update a financial model in Excel, then build a summary slide deck in PowerPoint, all in one continuous session. When the inputs change, Claude updates everything downstream automatically.

This is available now as a research preview for all paid plans on Mac and Windows.

Cross-app workflow matters more than any individual plugin

Connecting work platforms addresses the real bottleneck in knowledge work. Most professionals don't struggle because a single task is hard. They struggle because their workflow spans five different apps, and the hand-off between each is a place where context gets lost, formatting breaks, and time disappears.

New data connectors: FactSet, MSCI, and more

Anthropic also added new MCP connectors (the protocol that lets Claude talk to external software) for enterprise data platforms:

  • FactSet: Real-time market data, fundamental analysis, earnings estimates, and research insights
  • MSCI: Proprietary index data, including performance, exposures, constituents, and methodologies

These join existing connectors for Google Workspace, DocuSign, Apollo, Clay, Outreach, Similarweb, LegalZoom, Harvey, WordPress, and others.

Partner-built plugins from S&P Global (bringing Capital IQ Pro data into Claude) and LSEG (live yield curves, real-time cross-asset pricing, and financing economics) are also available in the same open-source repository.

Admin controls get a major upgrade

For IT teams and admins, there's a new unified "Customize" menu that consolidates plugins, skills, and connectors in one place. Admins can now:

  • Set up plugins from starter templates or build from scratch, with Claude guiding the setup process
  • Create org-specific private plugin marketplaces
  • Control per-user provisioning and auto-install
  • Use private GitHub repositories as plugin sources (currently in private beta)
  • Track usage, costs, and tool activity via OpenTelemetry support

Slash commands (the /command interface) now launch with structured forms, so running a workflow feels less like writing a prompt and more like filling out a brief.

PwC is already on board

This launch partnership signal is notable. PwC is working with Anthropic to bring these agents into the CFO's office. As PwC's Anthropic Alliance Leader Sanjay Subramanian put it, the goal is "making finance teams an even more strategic and valuable function by giving every team member the tools to do more ambitious work, make better decisions, and grow the business in ways that weren't possible before."

When a Big Four firm starts building its practice around your AI platform, that's a strong signal the enterprise market is taking Cowork seriously.

What this means for you

If you're a knowledge worker wondering whether AI tools are actually going to change your day-to-day... this is the update worth paying attention to.

The plugin approach is smart because it sidesteps the biggest problem with general-purpose AI assistants: they require you to explain your job every time you open a new chat. A financial analyst shouldn't have to teach Claude what a DCF model is. An HR manager shouldn't have to explain what a 30-60-90 plan looks like. Plugins handle that upfront, so you can skip to the actual work.

The Excel-to-PowerPoint cross-app workflow is an early research preview, but the direction is clear. Anthropic wants Claude to eventually move across your entire tool stack the same way you do, carrying context and completing multi-step projects without you playing human middleware.

Where to get them

Cowork and all its plugin updates are available now for Team and Enterprise customers. The finance plugins are open source. The Excel-to-PowerPoint workflow is available for all paid plans.

If your job involves spreadsheets that become slides, research that becomes reports, or any multi-tool workflow where you're the glue holding it together, this is worth trying. Explore the full plugin library here.
