Welcome, humans.
These are WILD times, yāall. To keep things light, hereās ChatGPTās take on rejected New Yorker cartoons:
#5 is our fave!!
For more like this, hereās what happens if you ask ChatGPT to visualize how to get a boyfriend, or to draw you a new house plan. Think thereās enough garages?!
This oneās our favorite though: someone showed ChatGPT all their posts, and asked it to guess what they looked like, and uhhhh letās just say they felt attackedā¦
Hereās what you need to know about AI today:
- We break down what President Trump means for AI.
- OpenAI acquired Chat.com domain from HubSpotās cofounder.
- Perplexity's election coverage was a hit.
- NVIDIA became world's most valuable company.
Hereās what the next U.S. President LIKELY means for AI regulations (orā¦not regulations).
According to The Information, one of Trumpās first moves could be to āderegulate rules governing the construction of electrical generation to help speed data center constructionā
Former (and now future) President Trump has been mighty silent on AI. He made one comment about it back at his convention speech:
āAI needs tremendous energyā¦literally twice the electricity available now in our country.ā
Donald Trump at the RNC
ā¦and btw, heās not wrong. But at a recent Silicon Valley dinner with VCs Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, he elaborated: āAI is very scary, but we absolutely have to win. Because if we don't win then China wins, and that's a very bad world.ā
This captures Trump's AI philosophy: less regulation, more competition with China.
Here's what we know about his plans:
- Tear Down Biden's AI Rules āon day oneā: The RNC platform commits to repealing Biden's AI executive order. Instead, Trump wants industry-led safety testingālikely to narrow existing rules rather than eliminate them.
- Launch a āManhattan Projectā for AI Defense: Military-focused AI development programs are being drafted, benefiting defense contractors like Anduril and Palantir, w/ focus on competing with China.
- Maintain a ālight-touchā regulatory regime: Where he uses existing laws rather than creating new ones. As a result, state-level regulation may increase, particularly in Democratic states to compensate.
Hereās 5 consequences of Trumpās win:
- He promises to āban the use of AI to censor speech of American citizens.ā
- NIST's AI safety guidance work could be reduced to focus only on physical safety risks and the AI Safety Institute (AISI) could be wound down.
- Heās likely to pass tighter export controls on China, especially for AI development technologies.
- His trade policies could squeeze capital needed for AI R&D.
- He could enforce the closure of loopholes Chinese firms are using to access AI tools through cloud services.
The TL;DR: Trump's ālight touchā approach could mean easier startup capital, faster tech deployment, and less global governance participation.
These are all popular moves in the industryāover 40% of C-suite executives worry about regulation costs, and many VCs argue that current regulations risk creating an OpenAI monopoly.
Also, Trump's proposed 10% tariff on U.S. imports and 60% tariff on Chinese products could impact AI sector costs (like those made in Taiwan). Ā
Our take: There's a fascinating tension here. Trump acknowledges AI is āscaryā while simultaneously pushing to remove safety guardrails. The ultimate irony is his first term actually established some meaningful AI policies (that Biden kept!), focusing on R&D, workforce development, and protecting civil liberties. To be continued!
